One key to extending shelf life, reducing waste
Product stability and consistency are vital to brand integrity. In addition to harming one’s reputation, spoiled or off-color packaged products also can be very costly, contributing to wastage and even recalls.
This challenge has become only greater with consumers increasingly demanding that brand owners use more natural ingredients in everything from solid food, drinks and vitamins, to home- and personal-care products such as shampoos, dyes and cleaning chemicals. Such ingredients, however, are more susceptible to exposure to UV light, which can negatively impact the appearance, fragrance, color, flavor or nutrient value of the contents.
To ensure product consistency, the contents of PET packaged goods must be protected from exposure both to sunlight and to indoor lighting during storage, distribution, retail display and post-purchase storage.
This is where Milliken’s ClearShield® Colorless UV absorbers in PET bottles and containers are making a difference. ClearShield technology offers an alternative, simpler way to protect against UV exposure. By incorporating the UV absorber into the PET package itself, it allows brand owners to remove the often-high loadings of UV additives previously included in the formulations of the packaged contents. And by helping to reduce the need for stabilizers and preservatives, it often is possible to reduce formulation complexity, which can further reduce cost.
