At NPE 2018, Sumitomo (SHI) Demag will demonstrate injection-compression molding of thin-wall lids featuring Verstraete in-mold labels and Milliken ClearTintâ„¢ colorants.

Sumitomo Demag (booth W3045) is joining Verstraete IML, specialty chemicals supplier Milliken & Company and several other supplier partners at NPE to demonstrate all-electric injection-compression molding plus in-mold labeling of thin-wall parts on a sub-5- second cycle. The Verstraete label is printed on both sides with a window area in the lid to see the food inside. The transparent, blue ice cream container lids, molded of Pinnacle Polymers’ 1350N homopolymer polypropylene, feature the beautiful aesthetics of Milliken ClearTint colorants.

Injection-compression molding helps deliver thinner walls (lightweighting) while maintaining a flat part. The thinner walls produced in this demo — just 0.014 in (0.35 mm) thick — reduce resin, cooling time and cycle time. The result is more parts per hour at less cost.

The mold for the thin-wall lid is supplied by Rouxel S.A. and Techno-Moules P.L.C., Inc. Other companies contributing to the demo: Machines Pagès, Gammaflux, Frigel North America, Inc., All World Machinery, Comet Plastic Equipment and MAC Automation Concepts.

Milliken ClearTint colorants deliver the clearest and brightest colors for transparent PP. They can be used as a light tint to mask residual haze or to achieve deep, rich shades.
