Thermoformers, let’s make one thing Ultra Clear
Thermoformers have been molding food packaging out of polypropylene (PP) resin for years. But, until recently, they were acutely aware that doing so meant having to accept the undesirable, milky appearance of the material in such applications. No more.
By using polypropylene clarified with Milliken’s Millad® NX™ 8000, processors now can make thermoformed and foldable packaging that not only matches the clarity long associated with PET and polystyrene resins, but which also is lighter weight, more sustainable, fully recyclable, ductile, microwaveable, and capable of being hot-filled.
The lower density of this material – known as NX™ UltraClear PP – means it is 18% lighter than PET. The result is that while 1 kg of PET yielded 57 trays in our comparative tests, the same amount of UltraClear PP produced 70 trays. This greater yield translates into lower per-unit production costs. Packages thermoformed from NX™ UltraClear PP offer the additional benefit of easy-seal/easy-peel, mono-material lidding.
PP also requires significantly lower energy inputs than competitive materials during production of the granulate, and has high energy recovery values – all of which contribute to an overall lower carbon footprint. UltraClear PP can be achieved only when using PP resins that contain Millad® NX™ 8000 clarifying agent.
