Milliken to Spotlight Exceptional Aesthetics, Performance and Sustainability of UltraClear PP for Food Packaging at Pack Expo 2015
August 5, 2015
Spartanburg, S.C. – Milliken & Company announced today that it will feature high-performance NX™ UltraClear polypropylene (PP) for food packaging applications at Pack Expo 2015 in Las Vegas, Nev., from Sept. 28-30. The company will showcase at its booth (#C-2256) a wide range of thermoformed packaging applications that demonstrate UltraClear PP’s superior transparency, high heat resistance and stiffness/impact balance. In addition, the material’s low density allows for cost optimization and sustainability by using less plastic. Advanced UltraClear technology can replace traditional plastics such as polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polylactic acid (PLA) and polystyrene (PS) in food packaging, and is driving new designs with greatly enhanced consumer appeal.
“UltraClear PP is breaking new ground by surpassing conventional materials in existing applications and helping the packaging industry create lighter weight clear packaging,” said Emily Blair, business development manager, Milliken & Company. “By leveraging our next-generation Millad® NX™ 8000 clarifier to enhance the desirable attributes of PP, Milliken has set a new standard of materials excellence. UltraClear PP is becoming the most attractive choice over traditional plastics and offers brand owners new ways to meet the changing demands of consumers and the marketplace.”
UltraClear PP can be utilized to address several packaging macro trends. These include consumer preferences for clear packaging, industry demand for greater cost-effectiveness and a growing interest in sustainable products and practices. The Milliken technology gives PP a clarity boost that overcomes the undesirable milky appearance of thermoformed PP. It delivers high transparency similar to PET, PLA and PS for thermoformed applications such as ready meals, clamshell containers, lids and meat trays. Because of its superior aesthetics brand owners increasingly choose UltraClear PP as their preferred packaging technology to appeal to consumers, who equate clarity with cleanliness and authenticity, and perceive the contents of clear packaging as wholesome and of high quality.
UltraClear PP also supports sustainability. For example, food trays manufactured with PP enable more innovative, functional packaging options by combining a PP package and a PP film so the whole system is more easily recycled vs. multi-material or multi-layered PET trays, which may be landfilled. Additionally, UltraClear PP is a lower-density material that can deliver a weight reduction between 10 and 20 percent compared to PET food packaging. Less weight means lower fuel consumption and emissions during shipping, and also helps to reduce consumption of raw materials.
Tray-Pak Corporation’s new food containers for hot-to-go and heat-at-home applications, which use UltraClear PP and were launched in June, will be on display at Pack Expo 2015 in the Milliken booth. The new containers illustrate the Milliken material’s glass-like clarity and recyclability, and give Tray-Pak customers the option to differentiate their containers with Milliken’s ClearTint™ colorants, which are engineered to maintain excellent levels of clarity.
Milliken technology experts will be available at Pack Expo 2015 to discuss how businesses can leverage UltraClear PP formulations to differentiate their products and offer the unique and functional packaging options that their customers demand.
